Personal Care Giver

What is the role of a Personal Care Giver?

A personal care giver provides care as outlined on a care plan which is determined by a home care nurse.  Care provided may include such tasks as bathing, grooming, toileting, dress assist, assisting clients with their medication and other delegated tasks.  Care may be short or long-term.

What skills are needed to be a Personal Care Giver?

A personal care giver needs to be able to work independently.  Care givers are able to handle a variety of matters requiring discretion, good judgement and sensitivity with a diverse group of clients.  A positive attitude with a commitment to providing quality service is required.  A personal care giver must be able to perform the required tasks and have the ability to travel throughout the community.  The level of care provided varies from client to client.

What qualifications are needed to be a Personal Care Giver?

A personal care giver must be a certified Health Care Aide or equivalent or be able to show competency in the necessary areas.  If not a certified Health Care Aide you must be willing to undertake the necessary training. Health Care Aides need to be adaptable and articulate with good communication skills. Health Care Aides must be capable of maintaining confidentiality and respect for clients and their families.

Will a Criminal Check be required?

All employees of Ponoka FCSS are required to complete a criminal record check.

Is a vehicle and valid driver’s license required?

The Personal Care Giver provides services either in a lodge setting or in the client's residence within the community.   Community clients may be either from the town or county of Ponoka therefore a vehicle and valid driver’s license is required. Additionally, two million in third party liability insurance is required. 

What are the hours of work?

Due to the needs of the clients, morning shifts may start at 6:00 am. Evening shifts may finish at 10:00 pm.  The hours of work are part-time during the week and also during the week-end.  Shifts are flexible.

What support is available?

Administrative support is available during regular office hours.  If the need arises, administrative staff can be reached after-hours.
